Decades ago, very few people can become a cameraman or filmmaker because the only cameras for taking videos are big, heavy, and expensive. The same cannot be said these days.
Thanks to technological advancements, almost everyone can be a filmmaker as smartphones and DSLRs can take quality videos. All you need is a nice compact camera and some knowledge of taking great videos.
But those who want steady images should invest in a camera stabilizer. Fortunately, there are plenty of compact camera stabilizers on the market. One of them is the ULANZI U-Grip Kit. How does this product fare against its competitions? Let’s find out!
ULANZI is a China-based company that has been established by photographers. Their main goal is to provide stylish, quality, and practical products to photographers and videographers, especially those who use their phones and/or compact cameras.
The brand offers phone mounts, lenses, selfie sticks, lights, microphones, tripods, sliders, and stabilizers. The ULANZI U-Grip Kit is one of their best-sellers and it promises to be the perfect companion of compact cameras and camcorders for video makers, iPhone filmmakers, and bloggers.
This set comes with a triple three shoe mount U-grip, a one-inch video LED light with 96 colors and a battery, a USB cable, and a Boya BY-MM1 microphone set. The entire product is made from high-grade, impact-absorbent ABS plastic materials.
The handle is cushioned with NBR padding to lessen the stress on the hands of the user. Likewise, its rails have non-slip rubber to provide a secure and comfortable grip. There’s also a finger groove to secure the grip further.
The product is compatible with iPhone and iPhone plus, as well as with Canon, Nikon, and Sony DSLR cameras and camcorders. It can fit most compact camcorders and cameras that have the standard 1/4 20 thread.
The U-Grip’s triple shoe mounts found on top is a very beneficial feature. It can be sued to hold an extra camera flash, a video light, or an external microphone.
The ULANZI U-Grip Kit claims to be a great friend of bloggers, filmmakers, and cameramen who are using compact cameras, iPhones, and DSLRs. The stabilizer is made of quality ABS plastic that absorbs impact well, so it can protect your device while you’re using it.
The handle has been padded well, and non-slip rubber rails with finger grooves have been integrated to ensure a comfortable and secure grip. It also has a triple shoe mount which can hold the additional camera flash, video light, or external microphone that you might want to use while recording or filming.
As for the ULANZI U-Grip Kit’s flaws, the microphone that comes with the package does not work consistently. Likewise, the microphone holder tends to break easily, while the unit’s handle is not flexible. That being said, you get a video LED light with battery and a USB cable upon purchase, making it a complete set.
The ULANZI U-Grip Kit has many competitors on the market. For example, the Jansite Video Action Stabilizer Stabilizing Handle Grip Rig is also compatible with iPhone 7 and other brands of DSLR cameras and camcorders.
Like the product under review, the Jansite stabilizer also has three shoe mounts that can also be used for LED light panels, recorders, and microphones. Both products also work with many compact cameras as long as they have the standard 1/4 20 thread. They also both have a non-slip rubber and NBR cushioned handle pad to alleviate the stress of long hours of filming.
However, the Jansite Video Action Stabilizer Stabilizing Handle Grip Rig does not have the LED lights while the product by Ulanzi has 96. The Jansite product also does not come with a microphone, and some purchasers have noted that the product doesn’t really come with a phone mount. As such, the Jansite Video Action Stabilizer Stabilizing Handle Grip Rig is significantly cheaper than the product under review.
The Zeadio Video Action Stabilizing Handle Grip Handheld Stabilizer is another similar product. Just like the one from Ulanzi, this stabilizer is compatible with cameras and camcorders that have the standard 1/4 20 thread. Both products also have a hot shoe mount that allows for the attachment of extra video lights, flashes, or microphones.
Both products also have cushioned handles to alleviate the stress on the hands of the cameraman or filmmaker. The product under review, though, has non-slip rubber rails with finger grooves, which the Zeadio Video Action Stabilizing Handle Grip Handheld Stabilizer does not offer.
The Ulanzi stabilizer also has a microphone and 96 LED lights, which the stabilizer from Zeadio also does not provide. The ULANZI U-Grip Kit, though, is significantly more expensive than the Zeadio Video Action Stabilizing Handle Grip Handheld Stabilizer.
There are many reasons why buyers must feel compelled to purchase the ULANZI U-Grip Kit. For one, it is a complete set, so you no longer need to buy the basic camcording accessories. It is also compatible with a lot of compact cameras and DSLRs, as well as with your handy iPhones.
Now, you may ask, “Are these virtues enough reasons to choose this product over the others?” Unfortunately, this stabilizer from Ulanzi has its flaws, specifically in relation to the microphone, as well as its handle’s flexibility. Nevertheless, these are only minor flaws and won’t impact its function as a stabilizer.
When compared to other products, the ULANZI U-Grip Kit has almost the same features. Other competitors such as the Jansite Video Action Stabilizer Stabilizing Handle Grip Rig and Zeadio Video Action Stabilizing Handle Grip Handheld Stabilizer are similarly designed and are more affordable. This is probably because the ULANZI comes with more features.
With that in mind, if you have enough budget for a stabilizer that is ready to be used right out of the box, the ULANZI U-Grip Kit would be a perfect choice.
